Abstract: A critical analysis of statecharts is presented, motivated by difficulties observed in practice by the author and supported by examples. Particular attention is paid to the possible uses of hierarchy and their effects. Despite the notation's popularity, the observations indicate fundamental problems with using statecharts for specification. (Update)
