Abstract: We consider a general version of the multicast authentication problem, where we wish to authenticate a packet stream transmitted over a fully adversarial network. Namely, the network may drop chosen packets, rearrange the order of the packets, and inject new packets into the stream. If each packet were signed by the sender, then the only damage the adversarial network could inflict is packet loss, as the receiver would simply reject packets whose signature is not verified.
