Abstract: We present and analyze several simple algorithms for accurately summing n oating point numbers S = i=1 s i , independent of how much cancellation occurs in the sum. Let f be the number of signi cant bits in the s i . We assume a register is available with F > f signi cant bits. Then assuming that (1) n  b2 )c + 1, (2) rounding is to nearest, (3) no overow occurs, and (4) all underow is gradual, then simply summing the s i in decreasing order of magnitude yields S rounded to within ...
