Abstract: Problem solving can be compared to a search in a state space. The description of the domain knowledge must be encoded as a knowledge base, then the problem solver searches through the state space for an appropriate answer. The experiment reported here is a comparison between GAs and a rule-based system searching the same space: that of four-part harmonisations of chorale melodies. The experiment leads to the conclusion that the quality of the solution fundamentally depends on the knowledge... (Update)
