Abstract:

The three-dimensional extension of the SAND (Spatial And Non-spatial Database) system is described, as is its use for data found in scientific visualization applications. The focus is on data that corresponds to surfaces of 3-dimensional volumes in space. Some of the principal operations supported by SAND involve locating spatial objects in the order of their distance from other spatial objects in an incremental manner. These techniques are shown to be useful for enabling users to visualize certain proximity relations without having to execute spatial sorting algorithms to completion. The application of spatial join and a ranking spatial semijoin to scientific visualization problems is presented and illustrated with meteorological queries against a GIS.
