Abstract: We describe and evaluate WatchTower, a set of library routines that simplifies the collection of performance data for the monitoring of Windows NT/2000. WatchTower has an overhead similar to that of existing tools but is more easily embedded into other applications. More important, we show how data reduction techniques can be used to diminish the volume of performance data gathered to only that which is useful; while still capturing the overall behavior of the computer.
