Abstract: Introduction In this chapter, we address the issue of obtaining consistent information from inconsistent databases -- databases that violate given integrity constraints. Our basic assumption departs from everyday practice of database management systems. Typically, a database management system checks the satisfaction of integrity constraints and backs out those updates that violate them.
