Abstract: A new multicast model is needed to support a wide range of powerful multimedia applications on the Internet. Today's model, IP Multicast, is admirable for its conceptual simplicity, but hides too much important behavior behind a veil of abstraction. Additional services have been built on top of IP Multicast, however each has been more complicated than necessary, indicating that IP Multicast is the wrong primitive for alternative multicasting applications.
