Abstract: SMASH is a system for automatically removing text from a web page as hyperlinks are selected. Making links (and optionally other related text) click-once allows a system to avoid clutter and provide visual feedback to a user. Unlike typical other adaptive hypertext systems, SMASH generates pages specially on the origin server but allows the browser to update the content automatically and efficiently.
