Abstract:
An autonomous, image--based technique for rendering real--time navigable, virtual environments is discussed. The technique uses photographs of a scene from two or more views and the given geometric, light source, and camera information to recover specular properties and diffuse reflectance textures for the shown surfaces. This allows additional views of the scene to be rendered using novel illumination if necessary. Recovery of the reflectance properties is achieved through a partial inversion of the virtual environment rendering equation, which incorporates radiosity and first--order specular reflection. An example environment rendered using this technique is described. i
