Abstract: Noninteracting mixtures of electrons and acoustic phonons may behave as a van der Waals binary system. A mean field critical line occurs up to electron concentrations of the order of the order of 10 21 cm \Gamma3 and temperatures of 10 2 K. The phase diagram reveals stable-metastable as well as stable-unstable boundary surfaces. On the latter the states have singular isothermal compressibility. PACS numbers: 71.38.+i, 64.60.My. I.
