Abstract: this paper is to review the basic features and practice of cryptography. We shall begin with an overview of the basic techniques and concepts. In particular the important concept of a digital signature will be introduced and its significance for an electronic commerce framework explained. This leads us naturally on to the notion of certification and trusted intermediaries.
