PAPER Special Section on Intelligent Signal and Image Processing A Bit-Operation Algorithm of the Median-Cut Quantization and Its Hardware Architecture
Abstract:
thispi er, an algorithm of the median-cut quantization (MCQ) ispvE osed. MCQ is the technique that reduces multi- aluedsampEE to binary- alued ones byadapE ely taking the median alue as the threshold. In this work, the search pv cess of the median alue is deri ed from the quick-sort algorithm. The pev osed algorithm searches the median alue bit by bit, andsamp= ` are quantized during the searchpfl cess. Firstly, the bit-serialpi cedure is shown, and then it is modified to the bit-pfl`EvL8 p cedure. The extension to the multi-le el quantization is also discussed. Since the pev osed algorithm is based on bitop erations, it is suitable for hardwareimpflE58 tation. Thus, its hardware architecture is also pso osed. To erify the significance, for the apEE787vL= to the motion estimation, the p erformance is estimated from the synthesis result of the VHDL model. key words: adaptive quantization, median value, motion estimation,
