Abstract: Volcanoes appearing in SAR images of the surface of Venus are reliably detected and located automatically by a system designed to handle general visual pattern recognition problems. The system is based on classical techniques of linear filtering and supervised statistical pattern classification and is trained for the specific task using a small number of examples provided by experts; a set matched filters is synthesized from the training examples using principal analysis and normalization...
