Abstract: The design based approach has been repeatedly advocated by Sloman as a methodology for Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science. It is intended to be used as an approach to the study of complex control systems such as the mind (a view of mind which differs from the standard computational one). This paper summarises this approach together with its supporting philosophical underpinning by drawing together the diverse research work he has produced over the last seven years. Subsequently, ...
