Abstract: This paper addresses the problem of integrating metavariables with tactic--based
interactive theorem proving systems. We show how to take essentially any logic and
construct from it a class of tactic proofs that include tactic steps and metavariables.
These tactic proofs have the following properties: tactics can instantiate metavariables;
metavariables interact properly with substitution and variable binding; proofs can be
