Abstract:

The weather forecast centers work with a great volume of complex multivariate data, which usually have to be interpreted within short time. Scientific visualization techniques can be used to support both daily forecasting and meteorological research. This work reports the architecture and facilities of a system designed to support daily tasks and long-term research conducted by meteorologists at the 8 th Meteorological District, in South of Brazil. The tasks of meteorologists and the classes of application data were observed to define system requirements. System architecture and implementation follow a tool-oriented approach and the object-oriented programming paradigm, respectively. The tool-oriented approach is briefly described. The paper also discusses the results of applying the multiquadric method to interpolate data for the construction of contour maps. 1
