Abstract:
An image could be regarded as a surface which may have jumps at the outlines of the objects. Therefore edge detection and edge-preserving image reconstruction in image processing are essentially the same problems as jump detection and jump-preserving surface recovery in nonparametric statistics. Recently statistical analysis of jump surfaces recovery is under rapid development. In this paper we introduce some recent methodologies on jump detection and jumppreserving surface recovery in the statistical literature. Most of these methodologies are based on local smoothing and statistical nonparametric regression techniques such as local polynomial kernel estimation, local least squares estimation and local principal component analysis. 1
