Abstract:

This paper summarizes the results obtained by the team at Politecnico di Torino with the simulative investigation of ATM traffic and flow control algorithms, in cooperation with CSELT, within Project Copernicus 1463 (ATMIN). The integrated simulation environment that was developed for the analysis of ATM networks is first concisely described. It is based on two software tools that simulate the network behavior at different time scales, named `call-level " and `cell-level", and thus permit the computation of different types of performance metrics. The call-level time scale is the one at which the relevant events mainly concern the user access to communication services, hence the establishment and release of connections. The cell-level time scale instead is the one at which the relevant events mainly concern the handling of ATM cells and of the PDUs that are transferred by means of them. The second part of the paper presents a significative case study, chosen so as to be able to illustrate the use of the integrated simulation approach. 1 The Simulation Environment
