Abstract:
Deviod of any attenuating capability, multi-level secure (MLS) relational models suer from a critical shortcoming { they inundate the view of higher level users with irrelevant and inconsistent data making it dif-cult to assert any belief. They also do not lend any help to users in the belief reasoning process in the form of linguistic instruments which are essential ingredients in theorizing about the beliefs of other users at visible levels. Needless to say, this process of sifting through visible yet \useless " data and analyzing the most relevant data is a complex and cumbersome exercise. The impetus for our current research is the need to provide an adequate framework for belief reasoning in MLS databases. We demonstrate that a prudent application of the concept of inheritance in a deductive database setting will help capture the notion of declarative belief and belief reasoning in MLS databases in an elegant way. We strive to develop a poised and practical logical characterization of MLS databases for the rst time based on the inherently dicult concept of non-monotonic inheritance by proposing a F-logic style query language, called MultiLog, for MLS deductive databases.
