Abstract: This paper reviews requirements for supporting both capabilities in a resolution based framework, and considers logic programming schemes which sustain each kind of capability. It then considers attempts to reconcile these schemes to support both capabilities efficiently together. It argues that no approach so far advocated is ultimately satisfactory, although a hybrid approach of coupling resolution engines supporting each kind of capability is a workable compromise.
