Abstract:

STATEMENT: This paper addresses the admission control and resource allocation problem in connection-oriented networks that support multiple heterogeneous applications, that is, applications with di#erent tra#c characteristics and di#erent Quality of Service #QoS # requirements. The challenge is to determine a resource allocation scheme that: #i # meets the QoS requirements of the services provided by the network; #ii # e#ciently allocates resources by appropriately distributing the QoS among the various resources at each link along the path of a connection; #iii # satis#es the user's preferences and simultaneously is social-welfare maximizing; and #iv # satis#es the informational constraints imposed by the network; speci#cally it takes into account the fact that the network is an informationally decentralized system where the number of users is unknown, and each user's preferences and input tra#c characteristics are private information. The contribution of this paper in this area is as follows: #1# the formulation of a general optimization problem that has the following features: #a# incorporation of the QoS requirements along paths; #b # allocation of resources along paths with multiple links; #c # allocation of multiple type of resources at each link;
