Abstract:
Low power implementation of adaptive filters for channel equalization and interference cancelling is important for wireless communications transceivers. In this paper we obtain asymptotic expressions for the increase in mean square error of the widely used LMS adaptive filter when the total power dissipated is decreased by reducing the number of data and filter coefficient bits used in the filter. We also obtain expressions for the power-optimal bit-allocation factor which determines the optimal proportion of bits to allocate to the data, the remainder being allocated to the coefficients. Numerical studies are presented for an exponential memory ISI channel and 4-ary PSK signaling.
