Abstract:

was established in response to the need for comprehensive network management and control architectures for the Giant Gigabit Networks (GGNs) of the 90s. "Gigabit " means ultrahigh speed broadband networks carrying multi--service traffic, such as video, audio, and computer data, with a diverse range of quality--of--service requirements. "Giant " means complex-- large networks with a very large number of physical and logical entities, services, and users to be managed and controlled. Network management and control research problems arise from the enormous complexity of these networks as well as the difficulties in controlling them in real--time. Solutions require new approaches for both real--time monitoring and control as well as management architectures and algorithms. The COMET research activity focuses on the foundations for scaling and operability of GGNs, and on the distribution of intelligence and the coordination among intelligent entities for managing the vast communications resources created by these networks. Because of the complexity of this problem, an interdisciplinary approach exploring a range of interacting research directions is essential. The COMET group is led by Professor Aurel A. Lazar,
