Abstract: Introduction Recent development of digital compression standards [5, 12, 34] and the low cost of video peripheral hardware have enabled the deployment of digital video applications in general purpose workstations and personal computers. Video and audio are usually termed "continuous media" (CM) because of their isochronous nature; in digital form, they can be integrated with traditional, "discrete" data types such as graphics and text.
