Abstract: We survey and compare the centering theory and the salience-based approach as two approaches that
attempt to account for the relations between the changes of attention and the choices of referring
expressions in discourse. We discuss the similarities and differences between the notions of backwardand
forward-looking centers and the transitions from one backward-looking center to another in
centering theory, and the notions of reference to an entity in the topic or in the focus and the changes... (Update)
