Abstract:
One ofthemostcommon approachesforaccessing heterogeneousinformationsystemsisbasedon constructinga globalschema describingtheinformation intheindividualdatabases.In ordertoautomaticallybuildsuch a schema,we needtoformallyrepresent thedatabaseschematapopulatingthecomponent informationsystemsand theirinterrelationships. Towardsthisaim,we usea logiclanguageto expressinterdependenciesbetweenclassesbelonging todifierent schemata.Such interdependenciesallow a designerofa cooperative informationsystemtoestablishseveralrelationshipsbetweenboththeinten sionaldeflnitionand thesetofinstancesofclasses representedindifierentschemata.The logiclanguage anditsusageintheprocessofbuildingtheintegrated schema ispartofa completesystemwhosemainaim istheeasyand homogeneousaccesstocooperative informationsystems. 1
